The EDU domain is limited to 4 year colleges and universities. This
rule was established several years ago and documented in RFC 1591. To
help with the verification of requests, the following lists are being
used:

Producer of List List contents
---------------- -------------

Dept. of Education <www.ed.gov> US Colleges and Unviersities
IAU* <www.unesco.org/iau> International Colleges and Unviersities
NAIS** <www.nais.org> Independent Schools

-------------
*IAU stands for the International Association of Universities
**NAIS stands for the National Association fo Independent Schools

You must be a part of one of these lists in order to qualify for a
.EDU domain.

Names in the EDU domain are for whole colleges or universities, not
for parts of colleges or univerisities; that is, schools,
departments, institutes, laboratories, centers, libraries, or colleges
within universities, do not qualify.

Organizations of colleges and/or universities, such as, consortia,
or associations, also do not qualify.

In the early days of the Internet several things that did not qualify
according to this rule were registered in the EDU domain. These early
cases do not establish a basis for exceptions to the rule now.

Previous mistakes do not justify new mistakes.

Thanks.

IANA
