GENERAL INFORMATION

    This is version 0.7.6 of PAN, the Pimp Ass Newsreader. Its goal is to
    make a user-friendly and powerful USENET newsreader for GNOME. Its
    user interface is based loosely on popular newsreaders for Windows.

    Current features include:

	    * decoding of binary and multipart
	    * attachments
	    * article threading
	    * posting
	    * user-configurable interface
	    * multiple usenet server support
	    * server password authentication
	    * client-side storing of group lists and
	    * article headers

    The official ftp site is:

	    ftp://source.rebelbase.com/pub/pan

    The official web site is:

	    http://www.superpimp.org/

    This is alpha software, so don't expect everything to work correctly
    or even at all.

REQUIREMENTS

    Pan requires that you have installed a few working libraries:

      * glib/gtk+ 1.2.6 or higher
	See the GTK+ homepage (www.gtk.org) for information on how to
	download and install GLIB and GTK+.

      * gnome-libs 1.0.16 or higher
	See the GNOME homepage (www.gnome.org) for information on how to
	download and install GNOME.

      * Berkeley DB 1.8.5 or 2.7.7
	This is a prerequisite for gnome-libs, so once you have that
	installed, you will already have this. You should be aware
	though that some gnome installations are built on top of bdb
	1.85, which has many bugs. You may be better off running pan
	(and the rest of gnome, for that matter) with bdb 2.7.7 with
	1.85 compatabilityturned on.  (gnome-libs doesn't build with
	bdb 3.x yet, so we don't either.)

    Pan also makes use of the 'uulib' and 'gettext' libraries, which
    are both included as part of the source package for those who
    don't already have them installed.

UPGRADING

    Upgrading typically requires that you do the exact same procedure
    as described in the INSTALL file.

    We would recommend that if you run into any problems using this
    newer version with your previous installing, that you remove the
    old configuration files and data directories (config file is
    ~/.gnome/Pan and the data dirs are typically in ~/.pan).

INSTALLATION

    See the file 'INSTALL' for instructions.

HOW TO REPORT BUGS

    See http://www.superpimp.org/bugreport.html to report bugs.
