WHAT IS SLICE2/SPLICE2 ?

SLICE2/SPLICE2 is a set of command line utilities that were written to
cut large files down to size. They are similar but NOT compatable with DOS
utilities of a similar name - which to the best of my knowledge are not avail-
able for the OS/2 operating system. Naturally, the DOS versions of utilities
like these could be used in a DOS window but why have to bring up another window
and use more precious resources. SLICE2 will split any big file on your hard
drive and slice it up and copy to as many disks as needed. At least up to 999
disks. Anyone with a file to slice up that won't fit on 999 disks I applaud
and suggest you find another utility. SPLICE2 will reassemble the split up
file on your hard disk in the exact condition of the original.

HOW TO USE SLICE2/SPLICE2

SLICE2 is fairly simple to use. This version has no command line switches
and is rather obvious. If you have a large file named BIG.FIL and it is approx-
imately 2.5 megabytes long then type: SLICE2 BIG.FIL A:\

SLICE2 will start doing it's job and will prompt you when it is ready for
another diskette. Very little space is wasted except for a few small bytes on
the first disk. So a 2.5 megabyte file should fit on approximately 2 - 1.4mb,
4 - 720k, or 8 - 360k diskettes. SLICE2 will number the files accordingly -
BIG.1, BIG.2, etc.

SLICE2 does not erase or write to the original file. It will also not
over-write anything on a diskette. If you have a mostly full diskette and you
stick it in when SLICE2 prompts you for a diskette it will use the remaining
space on that diskette and prompt you for another if it needs to.

SPLICE2 also has no command line switches. Its syntax is even simpler to
use. To reassemble BIG.FIL on drive D: just type: SPLICE2 A: D:

SPLICE2 will not work correctly if you include the file name. Just make
sure you put the .1 diskette in and use only the source and destination drive
letters followed by a colon. eg. A: B: C: A:\ B:\ C:\ ( backslashes are ok
if you are addicted to typing them )

SPLICE2 of course prompts you when to put in another diskette and tells you
when it is done. If you put in the wrong diskette it will tell you with a
"Could not open source file" message or something similar. Then it will prompt
you again to put in the correct diskette and try again. If you decide to bail
out at that point hold down on the CTRL key and press C to quit. CTRL + C
will work at any time while using either utility.
